Gauges are holes in the ears and can close up on their own.

When the skin heals inside the holes and they are stretched like they are with gauges, they will not heal on their own. I have a teeny tiny piercing in my ear and I can not wear earrings for a year and still put one in. Plastic surgery will be necessary when you have a substantial stretching of the earlobe.

Also not everyone who has gauges are troublemakers either. Saying that everyone who has ___ is a troublemaker is an asinine statement. You have pierced ears, well in England the chavs (they're troublemakers) commonly have pierced ears with (fake) diamond studs in their ears and wear hoodies. By that knowledge I could make the case that all males with pierced ears who wear hoodies are criminals, which would paint you in a negative manner. The same asinine statement has been made about tattoos and there are great people (Mister Rogers, for example) who had tattoos. See how asinine the whole "people who have ___ are troublemakers" sounds?

I'm not a fan of any body piercing, including ears. There is a huge difference between ear piercing and gauging, however. It's tiny hole in a lobe vs making a hoop out of one. The hoop looks grotesque to me. Unsightly. Piercing is only noticeable under close examination. An ear isn't disfigured by it.
