Fewer Americans Commuting Solo to Work: Would You Ever 'Group Commute'?

Group commuting -- riding buses, trains, subways or sharing cars and vans -- rose from 2005 to 2011 in more than a third of 342 metropolitan areas for which data exist, according to a USA TODAY analysis.

The leader of group commuting in the U.S., by far, is New York. There was a two-percent-point jump in New York mass transit use, according to USA Today. In fact, almost a third of residents in the New York metro area use public transportation. Whether it's by bus, trains, subways or carpooling, do you think "group commuting" is a good idea? Would you ever do it?

USATODAY.COM reports:
USA TODAY analysis finds more commuters are opting to travel in groups.

No, no one lives near enough to me to do this. I think that taking the commute alone in the car is relaxing.

I'd hate to ride a bus/train and have people invade my personal space. In my own car I don't have to hear people whining, see them coughing, listen to loud conversations, get heckled for money, be sexually harassed or annoyed by people I can actually hear.

I'd probably walk with ear buds or ride my bike rather than use public transport- sorry it's just not safe enough and too obtrusive.

Not with my job. No one to commute with. Also, I like my private time driving to and from work.

The POV is at the heart of the US economy , doing away with it will cut our GDP permanently by more than 1/3 . How are you going to replace the millions of jobs lost and the trillions in income lost ? How are you even going to replace the hundreds of billions in taxes that are being lost as we turn away from our love affair with the car ???? LOL at short sightedness and the idiots who advocate for it with out a clue or a care -

It is cheaper, and more relaxing as you don't have to worry about driving.

    "Would you ever....?"

In three years gasoline will cost $7.70 a gallon. A combination of the Obama Administration's war on fossil fuels combined with its inflationary Quantitative Easing money-printing policy will make it so. No question about it.

So how will Americans respond to $7.70 gasoline? The total cost of driving the typical gasoline-powered car will be $1.50 per mile. That means that a trip to Wal-Mart and back will cost $15.00 if the Wal-Mart is only 5 miles away, figuring in maintenance and depreciation of the vehicle. A ten-mile commute to your job will take $9,000 of annual after-tax income just to get there and back.

How about a plug-in electric car? All you need is a 240-volt electric outlet in your garage. Did I say garage? What about lower-income people who do not have a garage? I guess they'll just have to stay home and collect welfare.

It's all about quality of life. If you are forced out of your own car and onto public transportation, you put yourself in the hands of an unreliable system. Once you become totally dependent upon the transit system, the labor unions who call the shots will call a strike and you'll be left without any transportation. And without a car, the government and its labor unions can pretty much dictate where you are ...

A decline in the quality of life. A decline in personal freedom. All this awaits the average joe in America. It's a damn shame, especially since we had come so far. Thank for reading. Have a nice day.

You only need the 240volt charger if you want to charge in 4 hours instead of 8 with a regular extension cord. And the typical daily charge will cost less than $1. No garage required.

If the politicians had listened to T.Boone Pickens and required semi trucks to convert to natural gas, 70mpg diesel commuter cars would be paying $2/gallon when you're buying gasoline for $7+. I know a guy that rides his bicycle 20 miles to work almost every day.

You know Ayn Rand was an atheist, right?

I am going to have to say no even though it is a good thing in many way. I have children and if I get a call letting me know one of them has become ill and I need to pick them up and possibly take them to the Dr. I need to have my own vehicle. Another of my thoughts are I refuse to go out on Friday night or the weekends riding with other people. I want to be able to leave when I want to and not be dependent on someone else. When you get a lot of people in 1 vehicle talking to me it is like driving and texting at the same time. You are asking for trouble. When operating a vehicle these days you need to have your full attention on the road and all the drivers around you.

And I have. Think how many fewer cars would be on the road if every vehicle had 4 people in it. Okay - except trucks.

We should go back to shipping the majority of freight by rail, and the only (mostly smaller) trucks needed would be from the rail depots to final destinations... very few semi trucks would be tearing up our roads with 25,000 lbs per axle loads. Any still needed for expedited deliveries would have to pay relatively higher taxes to cover the higher damage they cause to the roads.

Use Public Transit but will get my 1978 Kawasaki 750B going again, can find a gasket set on eBay for $50, just need to find some space to do the work myself, done (successful) surgery on LapTops too.

Bad Psychology to drive in a vehicle that hold 6 alone exclusively not to mention wasting land & fuel.

So where do I find somebody going to the same place as I am? I like to carpool with friends, but not to be herded into mass-transit buses or trains. This isn't China and we aren't cattle.

Is it any wonder our economy is shutting down, with tyrant Obama's sky-high gasoline prices? How can we go anywhere, even to work, when there's no jobs? Might as well sit at home, or leave Babylon America for good.

If people ride in the car with me I have the radio off because I don't want complaints about what I play or how loud it is and I love my music, I also don't have many passengers either so it's rare.

My neighbour and I carpool to the U together 2 days a week. If I lived close enough to someone and worked near them I'd definitely carpool. Saves gas :) I used to do quite a bit of walking/ biking/ busing, but about a month ago I got a car and it has become my baby, and you know how it is with babies- you gotta take em everywhere!

Its safer than travelling alone especially if the car breaks down or someone tries to hijack it.
