Ever seen a live rat?

I've seen two dead ones, though :( Very scary. I stepped on one of them by accident >.< It was so embarrassing. There was a group around it, it was in the school yard, and I didn't realise it was a big circle, so I ended up walking through, not really paying attention, and then I stepped on something, looked down, and it was a dead rat >.<

At petsmart. lol

My teacher fed one to his snake as a class experiment; long story short I was the only one left in the room when he brought it out. What's so scary about a rat?

I've even seen Nutria . . . Which are responsible for destroying several hundred million dollars in Rice crops all throughout the American Rice Belt . . .

Yeah, believe it or not, their pelts used to be worth some money (.75 a piece) was what I last remember . . . The long wirey-hair on the top of the skin was gross, and had to be mechanically removed; however, beneath that "strange layer" laid another very soft/delicate fur that girls just loved . . . And the Fur Business people loved it too. But now, today, because of the animal-rights politicians, I think that the "love-for-Nutria-skin" has vanished the fashion industry. Some guy brought them over here from South America, to clean out his Lake of some unwanted vegetation. What a big "ratty" mistake that proved to be. I don't know what caused their demise in Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas; but you don't hear about them anymore like you used to back in the 60s-early70s. The animals, themselves, must have really thought that they were some kind of Beavers; and they would gnaw-down acres and acres of rice when it was about adolescent-size and build some strange-looking dams at the edge of the field. The destroyed portion of the field would never recover; and the farmer would recognize a low-yield because of that. Teenagers were hired to shoot them with .22 Calibar rat-shot, long-rifle, etc. And they were poisoned heavily, as well . . . I guess some form of erradication must have worked . You never hear about them anymore.

Last time I checked they alive a well in Port Fourchon LA.

Mouse yes..but rats..dunno for sure..may have been a hedgehog as well..but didn't like the sight all the same >_<

I have not seen a rat, but plenty of mice. Dont rats look like possum, and around the same size? My tom cat takes good care of the mice around the outslde of our neighborhood.

While visiting New York City 7 years ago. Don't think I'll go back because it just sat there on the sidewalk looking at me. Yuck!

The only times I remember seeing live ones was once at Home Depot (inside) and several at pet stores. I've seen many dead ones that my dogs have killed...

But I would have prefered to see a dead one...

My cat caught one and brought it back home as a gift for me..was still alive...worst gift I have ever been given..lol

So, grew up on the South Side of Chicago in the 70's. In the late 70's my neighborhood had a serious rat problem. They were everywhere they could find something to eat or find heat. Anyway, my friend and I used to hunt them. We would grab some sticks and walk through the alleys of our neighborhood and hunt rats. It was so much fun.

Here's how it went. We could kick garbage cans to see if there was rat in it. I forgot to mention that we went on garbage pickup days because it was easier to hunt rats out of empty garbage cans. Getting back to the story. We would walk through the alleys on thee South Side of Chicago and kick the empty garbage cans to listen for a rat to run around. If we heard the scratchy sounds of nails on metal, we knew we had a live one. We kick the garbage can until the rat jump out. Once it appeared on the side of the garbage can, we would beat it like wild savages until it was dead.

How this got started was, some kid started a rumor that you could get a dollar for every dead rat you brought in. I was 12 so I really didn't think this plan all the way through. Like after you kill the rat, how do you transport it. And, AND, where the hell do you take it? We'll never made dime one of off our murders but we kept on doing it. Eventually, later in the next summer, the city go serious about the problem and set out traps an poison.

I know, it kind of a sick story but it's true and I'm not that nutty kid any more.

I've held pet rats before. and I've had to handle wild ones to because my cat would catch them. some while still alive.
