Shaq Oneal is now a doctor!

The four-time NBA champion Shaquille O’Neal donned a cap and bright red XXXL-sized gown to receive his doctorate degree from Barry University Saturday in Miami, Florida.
On stage, he showed his enthusiasm in a way only someone over seven feet tall can do, by lifting his professor into the air.
After leaving Louisiana State University early for the NBA, Shaq went back to school and earned his bachelor’s degree and then a master’s degree and now, a doctorate in education.

    Good for Shaq! I have a daughter with a Ph.D -- it's hard work even if you're a gazillionaire basketball star. The interview I saw hinted he might go for a law degree too. He'd be mighty impressive in a courtroom lol.

    I'm undecided about Shaq. It's great if he is a role model, but I think his ego is bigger than his gown size.

    Listen to his interview. Maybe he does have a big ego -- or maybe he did, and now he's grown up. And, frankly, if he can use his ego to create good role modeling for kids, more power to him. He could have spent his money being the next playboy of the western world instead of on 3 higher ed degrees.

    He wouldn't be the first person to be proud enough of the achievement to want to keep it going. Granted it's ego, but is it all that bad? He IS a "doctor." We generally restrict the word to the medical profession, but it's not a rule.

    Why can't it be part of role modeling? "I've earned the right, and I'm going to act that way in public from now on. You can too." It seems to me it makes sense: He's not "Shaq" anymore; people need to respect that he's moved on, he's "Dr. O'Neal."
