We lost our American Pitbull Terrier of 12 years in March of this year and we buried her on our property with a celebratory gathering, honoring her with photos of us as a group with her and some of her favorite toys. We still feel hesitant about replacing her. Maybe this Fall. All the best to you and he is a lovely dog in this photo. Our hearts goes out to you. The pic is not our dog, but it looks so close that I've included it.
You'll know when it's time to get your new friend. We lost a dog we were very attached to several years ago, and I couldn't bear to get another dog. But, I did. Remember this: 1. You are not replacing the dog you lost. They are irreplaceable - all unique and wonderful. and 2. If you truly love dogs, your life will be incomplete without a dog. I can't imagine not having a dog. Our old cocker will pass soon - he's on the decline (14 years old), and I will miss him, but if I decide to get our other dog a playmate,I won't consider it replacing Max. He's one of a kind, and he'll always have that special distinction in our lives.
I know you are right. It will take time and he can definately never be replaced. I have had dogs in my life (and cats for that matter) ever since I can remember. You love them with all you have and that's why it hurts when they go. You are so right...they have special places in our lives that are all their own.
I feel the same way...but somebody wrote something to me the other day that made sense and made me feel a little better.
"Animals are perceptive on so many levels, and it hurt him to leave you every bit as much as it hurt you to lose him. He is grieving now, too, and part of the pain you carry in your heart is his."
That is why the heart is so heavy.
