My wife is in total control of the decorating, which is fine, her taste is great but I could never buy a painting and hang it on the wall without prior agreement, or even move my favourite chair in direct line of the television. Could you or would you let your husband/partner ?

But if you don't mind some advice? I have dealt with this many times with clients and I would say bite your tongue and do as she says. 99% of the time the wife is correct. It may sound like a stereo type but most women choose home furnishings for looks while most men look for comfort. I would suggest converting the garage or a back yard storage shed into a man cave. You should have a month or two of peace before she decides it needs to be re-decorated.
Good advice though about converting a space, I'm thinking about doing that with our basement, but that has to be put on back burner until nursery is completed.
And you're definitely right about the nursery. That little guy or gal will be here before you know it. :-)
