Does the term 'knocked up' mean unmarried and pregnant or just pregnant?

So I'm having an argument with my boyfriend, He says that any pregnant woman is 'knocked up' which I reply with that the terminology may only apply to a woman who is unmarried because a woman who is married isn't knocked up it's just assumed that it's 'part of the plan'....do you think the phrase "Knocked up" means a general phrase or just for an unplanned unmarried pregnancy?

Knocked up means pregnant, but it can be a playful term, or it can be a derogatory term. When it's used in a derogatory fashion it's usually in reference to an unmarried woman getting pregnant, or a married woman getting pregnant via a man other than her husband.

When I first heard this term used decades ago it meant pregnant. That is what it meant years ago. Married women were even called knocked up. Maybe things have changed????

It means pregnancy, regardless of circumstance.
On a similar note, I recently learned that saying "I'm stuffed" means that you are pregnant, in Australian slang.

Any pregnancy, but is said in a negative way. Just as the terms Old Man - (husband) or Old Lady (wife) are negative references. Truth be told, I care for the use of any of the three.

There's what it technically means and what people perceive it to mean. Sometimes the perceived definition holds more weight. When most people hear the term knocked up they don't usually think of a married couple.

It simply means pregnant, with no other connotations. It is, however, a low class slang term and is really not appropriate for polite conversation. Common usage is mostly used in situations regarding an unmarried mother, not because it has such meaning, but because that is the type of language typically used in those situations.

I've run into enough discussions of married men having knocked up their wives that it's either become or is becoming a definition at this point in time.

It can be used to describe any pregnancy but is generally used more often when referring to an unplanned pregnancy regardless of marriage status.

Speaking as an RN, I am pretty sure knocked up is not an DSM approved diagnoses (teasing ;)) I have 6 kids, been married for all of 'em to the same dad (See, we can believe in miracles), and I always used the term knocked up, cuz I like it lol

Hello, There, Retired. Glad to meet you, and see that someone else is a little confused about how my response was racist? In all honesty, since nitwit can't seem to respond, I don't see how anything I wrote was racist. Thanks for helping with that bully...

Ummmm, how is that racist? Not tryiing to offend anyone, and btw, I have a masters in nursing, with advanced practitioner license, and oddly enough, specialize in forensics and abnormal psychology. So, please, elaborate. I do not understand how this that is racist. I am not baiting you, nor trying to cause any hard feelings. I just would like to know how I am racist, as I have never been been addressed in that particular manner. Also, can you please direct me to where in the initial response that race was mentioned. Did I say what race I was? Or do you assume I am of a particular genesis? How am I a racist?

How soon you forget your recent post about your feelings after being here 6 days? I suggest everyone who see's this check you out real close...see your racist post that you seem so proud of. I don't give a rat's ass how long you have been married or if you gave birth to 20 children (((shudder))). You are a lier and a sock (fake profile). Whine all you want. You protest too much :/
