I grew up in a state where public education is near Third-World level in some areas.

Particularly when it's in something professional, such as a text or a commercial. I'm so sick of hearing "less calories"!!! You can count calories, so it's FEWER! Less sand, fewer grains of sand. Today in a text I was reading it said "more THEN ten." THEN is a time-related word. It essentially means "next". Both next and then have an e (a help to remembering). The correct word should have been THAN, except both writer and editor were lacking in knowledge or grammar. The comparative is than. The time-related word is then.

No, don't think people do it on purpose, maybe English isn't their first language and they are doing the best they can.

It drives me nuts that it seems acceptable now to end a sentence with a preposition and that people actually go out of their way to say something incorrectly...

    Where is Jim? (proper)
    Where is Jim at? (improper)
Jim is not "at" somewhere, and you sound illiterate when you ask it in that way.

Sometimes, I was taught to respect my language, and I cringe sometimes when I see it so abused. English has a unique place among world languages in that it is spoken by so many diverse cultures, and by so many different peoples around the world.

It is a worry that many to whom it is not their first language seem to articulate it better than those of us who claim it as our mother tongue.
