Well, my mother always called Woolworth's that... and 4 years ago, I went to one of the last Woolworths that was still open in the UK... on its last day of life.

I lived in Small Town, America. Where there was one located on main street. I still recall which corner it was on in my home town. I guess today's equivalent is the "Dollar Tree."

ME! ME! It was great!

(Of course, since my mother always bought us a hot dog and a toy, what's not to like?) I even remember saving my allowance and buying my mother that disgusting "Evening In Paris" 75-cent cologne. She made a point of letting me see her applying it but, I imagine, she poured it down the sink, scalded the bottle and put her own favorite inside.

But, I was so very proud.

Southerners...remember Ben Franklins?

I think they still have Ben Franklins in some areas. Do you remember Radio Girl perfume? Cool bottle and label but bad smell...

Oh, yes! You just reminded me of it. I remember going out, when in 7th or 8th grade, with some friends and all of us doing the EWWWWWWWW thing. I think I chose that Evening In Paris because of the bottle and label, too. It was a beautiful dark blue and silver. I was only 9 or 10.

I'd love to go into a Ben Franklin again. I just googled it and, sadly, no store is within 50 miles of me.

Yes! Good 'ol Woolworths! One of many fond memories. Now, with inflation, they're dollar stores. I'm surprised there's no "credit-card-only stores."

In Stroudsburg,PA. 1911 the first Newberry's 5&10 store the building is still there.And in Lancaster,Pa 1879 the first Woolworth's 5&10 store. I went to one's in NJ never in PA. I've been in the original Newberrys numerous times in Stroudsburg when it was a discount sore.I remember 3 levels in Perth Amboy NJ Woolworths and in
Keyport NJ Newberrys had 3 levels also.My fave was eating and spinning on the stools.Great memories. Good post!

OK triv time the tallest building in the world was the Woolworth building in NYC till 1930.Built in 1913 792 ft.One of the oldest skyscrapers in the US and top 50 tallest in the US 57 stories with 37 elevators and top twenty tallest in NYC.

As a kid I did all my Christmas shopping there. I bought my mother wonderful sparkling "jewels". Looking back they were pretty hideous but she always wore them proudly. That's what mothers do.

There were a number of them, Woolworth, W.T.Grant, Krieske's, McClories. These were chain 5 and dimes which were all over northeast 50-60 years ago. They were like Dollar General and other dollar stores.today.

Mine, too! It was a Kresge's and I worked in the pet department. They started me out in "Candy" and said I could eat all I wanted. Poor them. They transferred me to "Pets" soon after. I imagine they thought I wouldn't eat the parakeets and goldfish. I worked after school.
