    I must say ..
it is more difficult to keep up with the current 'slang' ..
as the years went by ..
    (I didn't use much to begin with .. )
However .. when one is around or raising teenagers ..
you get quite the 'education' on slang ..
(just to be able to figure out what those teens are up to in the first place!)

Linguists have established that people who don't pick up on the latest slang tend to be more emotionally stable and have a strong sense of self.

Or maybe they just live in a wicker basket.

Slang is usually invented by the young and replaced by the next wave. That's okay. You should definitely stop relying on it after you grow up.There are few things more embarrassing to hear than some old guy calling somebody bro or dude.

True. Every generation needs to establish its own language, just like every generation needs to figure out how to drive their parents crazy. Blue hair, zoot suits, baggy clothes, slang......All just manifestations of the same need to create an identity.

Sometimes I use slang ironically, and it's funny and a little self-mocking. Like all words, slang terms are tools, which may be applied with precision to make a point, or casually/colloquially.

Some slang is in the form of metaphor. They're not mutually exclusive classifications.

But slang merely substitutes one word for another and often unnecessarily. slang doesn't illuminate the understanding of what's being said. if I call something you own a "hoopty" , it's slang but slang for what? How would you know I'm talking about your old messy car?
Metaphor uses whats already familiar to explain the difficult Or uninteresting Slang doesnt always do that. Slang goes in and out of fashion. Metaphor doesn't.

Gee some of the people I'm around use the F world like the world the or a! All the time it's just enough already. Oh and my favorite is Blacks using the N world all the time yet being so upset by that world....dahhh

Youre imposing a false equivalancy between white dominant culture and the black experience within that culture. You can't do it anymore than I can get what is to be woman in a male dominated culture. So when you tell something is offensive I simply respect it because I wont ever 1. Have a baby 2. Get raped. 3 be questioned about choosing motherhood over a career. 4. Be instantly told Im weak. 4. Be called a whore as if thats my name. 5 have my anger blamed on my period.

A man calling you a bitch or some other gender specific word is different than you calling yourself one. Same with the N word. You dont have to understand why they use it. But they understand why YOU use it. I have learned never, never, EVER use the b word no matter how many times I hear women use it. That goes for the n word.

"Bitch sorry people don't get fired for saying bitch."

Oh, yes the hell they do! You won't call a woman a bitch at my workplace and walk away like nothing happened.

"So in the end you are saying that blacks think totally different then whites, spanish people and asians?"

No, I said culturally we have different experiences in the larger culture. Asian didn't need a Martin Luther King, lunch counter sit-ins, or have the very notion of their freedom destroy a country. There is a 200 year historical context you're ignoring. You don't have to appreciate that in your thinking. You obviously don't. How ever it's real and it's complicated and I don't expect you to get it. I'm not saying I get it. But I wouldn't tell 30 million people I don't share that experience with what they should say to each other.

That clearly wasn't her point. It doesn't matter if you can relate to them, it creates a separation between them and the people with whom they want to be thought equal.

I don't use it very often because if your white and living in my town you get kicked around for using slang not being racist or anything but that the way it is in a very small west Texas town known for rodeo and cantaloupes so when I use it I use slang on here and the facebook none of the locals think I have

Meant to press rarely. Usually only in social situations, and even then it's usually meant ironically. I do use it on occasion though, never when I'm writing something though.
