Take the example of cloning: if you were to be cloned, would your clone be a souless version of you? Of course not! The only thing being cloned is your physical features, your clone isn't actually you. He would have his own "soul".
I merely understand why people believe, and actually "feel" like they have something that is separate from body. I also understand that this "feeling" has been prostituted by religions to those that do not.
(utter lack of evidence is all anyone "should" need to at least be highly skeptical of the idea, but...)

That is freakishly incorrect. We know massive amounts about the brain. We definitely, 100% at least know enough to know that we cannot trust our own brain's interpretations in many, many situations. Our distrust of our brain's failings are the entire reasons things like the Scientific Method exist in the first place.
NDE's are just one of the whacky things our brain does, and we can reproduce it. Does this mean that we can explain exactly WHY it does this? No. But we certainly know enough to realize it isn't magic, or paranormal. In fact, nothing ever has been. Ever. No reason this will end, IMO...
