Do you think there should be a national bottle bill?

I try my best not to throw out plastic and aluminum bottles. Anything that can be brought to the dump for recycling I separate from my trash and bring it there. Anything that I can get 5 cents for I bring to the store to get my money back, except for lately. Lately, I've just been throwing the whole lot of it into the dump as it's time consuming to separate them all and I don't wind up with that much money considering all the bottles and cans that I could potentially be getting the 5 cents back from. I recycle not for the money, but for the environment. But for people who are only interested in the money, would a national bottle bill help to facilitate more recycling?

We recycle returnable bottles and cans, paper, aluminum cans and glass. When you see what comes from one family, then yes, those who are able to should be required to.
Not everyone can because some people don't have the room or are not capable of carrying the items for recycling.
So let's do what WE can.

There are people who can't do curbside recycling or it's difficult for them. I'm beginning to think all recycles should go in one bin and be separated on site to solve this dilemma. Organic things that get mixed in can just go to the trash. That makes two bins, instead of four or five as is the case in my neighborhood. Thanks for answering.

Sure, and the technology you mentioned regarding separated recyclables is probably well underway. I know they have enormous separators for regular trash with various items that can be reused, i.e., various metals, glass, etc.
You make a good point. There are too many people who simply can not do it.

It's underway but how long it will take to become really popular - i don't know. But you make good points too. I think something more should be done and if there's a way to make it easier that's always welcome.

That's true, but then some beverages that are actually healthy, like milk and juice and water, would no longer be affordable since the companies would pass the cost to the consumer or go out of business if paying for it themselves.

Keep it at 5 or 10 cents though and you'd still see a lot more litter being recycled. If I could get that for every can and bottle I recycle, I'd actually walk away with enough cash in hand to really make it worth my while to do financially, not just environmentally (as is the case now). So thanks for answering Kozmo.

Have booze & pop with a higher rate than dairy or water with juices in between is my moot suggestion. I live in area with good water so I (regionally) find bottled water expensive & litter-prone so have the levy adjusted for arid regions

It sounds like it might work and be very beneficial, although some may argue that while pop has no nutritional value, except the water content it is preferable to water when they can't afford juice or milk. But overall, I like it.

Thank You, for my "Sin Grade" scale. A debate (or study) between diet soda & sport drinks may be revealing (& put those 'energy' drinks under scrutiny).

Diet Pop is questionable because it seems to give some drinkers a false sense of security which 'enables' (Psych.) them to eat other unhealthy stuff that counters the benefit of the "sweetening agent".

I see your point, but believe that the matter of VAT taxes should go to the states unless it is paying for health care since it is a health related matter of drinking it, especially with the Triple Bacon, Double Cheese with Jumbo Fries & Rings! If I ate all that I'd be sick to my stomach, but then I hate bacon on cheeseburgers anyway and don't much like McDonald's except when it's the only place around and you're starving.

Might for some, the city here collects recyclables with the trash. Most people are too lazy and still would be for a few cents. We have people that collect cans off the streets and scrap metal since it's worth more. It helps some. I put my stuff out every week for them except soda cans, my husband wants to sell the aluminum himself.

They are building new machines that sift through the trash and separate the recyclables, so I see your point along with the fact that it might not be that much of an incentive. I usually get a couple of bucks, but it would be upwards of quite a bit more if all were returnable although still not a lot.
