He should be executed, but unfortunately, Italian law doesn't allow that.

With the number of people killed and he left his post, yes he should face criminal charges.

But only because of his negligence, not because he abandoned the ship afterwards.

I believe he'll face charges only if he's found guilty for causing the accident, but not because he didn't following instructions to go back to ship. Though it is a long-time practice of captains not to abandoned their sinking ships and to go down with them, it's not mandatory. So he won't be criminally charged for not doing these.

Those ships have the best navigational systems; he was asleep in the wheelhouse for sure. Turns out this wasn't the only time that happened on that same ship. It hit a dry dock s few years back I heard on the news. Don't know if the same Captain was in the wheelhouse.

Asleep at the wheelhouse or drinking with the sexy blonde he was with. Either way he screwed up.

If there is enough reason to assume that he abandoned ship and/or deliberately endangered his crew and passengers (which I believe there is) then abso frikking lutly yes.
However, like in my country and like in the USA also in Italy counts "innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law"

The man's actions resulted in the death of several people, or I should say his negligence of duty did. He should be convicted of manslaughter and imprisoned

Irregardless of the "accident" he left the ship without making sure the passengers had departed.
