Do you think that someone can be a member of more than one religion at the same time?

"Thou shalt have no other gods before me." (Exodus 20:3).
God said it and I believe it.

No not a true member because as far as I know all religions have things that make them incompatible with one another, whether minor or major.

Well, it IS America! Freedom of religion is freedom of religion! For me, I can barely stand going to one church at a time!

In Japan many people are Buddhist and Shinto at the same time.

Certain sects of Buddhism are combined with other religions like Shintoism or Taoism. However None of the three mid-eastern monotheistic religions are able to be combined with others as it would compromise their doctrinal integrity.
Islam goes a step farther as it is more than a religion, it is a lifestyle and a legal code; Thus it is not possible to have a secular democracy and Islam coexist because true Muslims must vote to rid themselves of liberty and accept sharia's theocratic dictatorship.

It is fragile there. Democracy seems to be losing ground there.

All religions that I know of believe that they have the exclusive right way to do things. To the extent that you differ from their proscribed actions, you are wrong. This makes sense to me because in the world there is right and wrong, and the extent to which you differ from the right way is usually the extent to which you are going down the wrong path. Take kosher for example, Judaism believes that it is necessary, Christianity does not, obviously they can`t both be right, because eating certain foods cannot be both bad and not bad, therefore one of them has to have their messages mixed. To me this is how it is in terms of all of the distinctions between the religions that I know of. On the other hand I have heard that it is possible to be a Taoist and a Buddhist for example and I have to admit I am not all that familiar with the doctrines of those religions (particularly Taosim) so that might be possible but for those religions that I know of I would have to say no.

Sorry, Wayne TH 333, and Pbutterboy, you really can't. Think of the vast differences between Islam, Christianity, Wicken...None are compatible with each other....the only common denominator is that people flock to each for wanting the same results, however, none produce a result that is anywhere near that of the others. Wiken/Pagan/Witches believe in the Earthly Spirits, (Earth, Wind, Fire, Etc), and how they interact with Mankind, and they revere The Earthly, inner and outer, while Islam isn't compatible with any other "Religion", as they only believe in Mohammed, and dominating every other race and culture on Earth, while Christianity follows God, His Son, Jesus, and the tenants of Love, For each other and all our Fellow Men. You CAN NOT follow any of these while following any other...it's either/or.

You mean like when I was growing up and there was a group jews for jesus?

Actually the very basis of religions, the US vs THEM exclusiveness would prohibit that. Hell they have it set up so even different sect and sub sects of the same cult consider themselves different and all swear theirs is the only the and right one. Kind of like asking if a jew can be a christian islamist. They all worship the same god but each excludes the other as well as some of their own believers

Kind of the opposite of the judeo/christian/islamic trilogy. They all believe in the same god but indifferent ways. I think what you are describing is today's self professed pagans. They get to believe in whatever myth they want and it makes no difference

The first Christians were ALL Jews, and even today, many are. It's just a question of whether Jesus is the prophesied Messiah or not. Yes and you're a Christian, No and you're a Jew.
For Islam the question is: Is Mohammed the true prophet of God? Yes and you're a Muslim for life. Islam is the only religion that requires yyou to die in order to quit.

They are doctrine issues. Variations on themes so to speak. Just like the various dogmatic and theme issues between the seemingly thousands of christians sects and jewish sect of the cult that all three religions belong too.

    Tell me now Hon,
Was Jesus of Nazareth a Jew?
Name one of the twelve apostles who was not a Jew.
How about Judas's replacement, Saul aka Paul, a Jew?
Have you ever heard of the term "Messianic Jew"?
And my eyes aren't brown, look again.
By the way, are yours? Sweet Lips

Any one can be any religion and change their beliefs but they were no longer jewish when they professed a new man made god or religion. Paul was not a replacement and not even a real apostle.

But I will say you are a great example of how a little knowledge is dangerous and usally wrong and miss used. But that does not make you any less full of crap. I will give it that you are good at the apologetics of the sect

I think religion is a personal thing that can't be solely determined by denominational mandate. Many people have influences from other religions and philosophies that shape their belief system.

  • PBUTTER... Headhun... 2012/08/12 18:40:07

No not yet but I wouldn't be apposed to it. I just never had a reason to. If I was in a town or city and I wanted to go to church and the closest one to me was ether a mosque or synagogue I would go. They might not like me being there but it wouldn't bother me. When I pray to God it's between him / her and me. I say him / her because I don't believe that God is a him or a her --"GOD IS GOD". As he / she said, "I AM” what “I AM". Thanks

If you're a good Christian you will be a good Buddhist, and a good Hindu, Jew and Muslim, etc., automatically, and vice-versa. The Greatest Story Ever Told is the same story throughout all of the above; the outer covering of the story – the way the inspired local authors chose to flesh it out; its setting and characters – is not important at all.
