It shouldn't matter what anyone else thinks. . . If you want to learn to play the accordion, then you should do it.

By what standards? He's talking about learning. One has to be a student first, invest some years to become "good". I may very well be wrong but I get this feeling from your comment that you are about to discourage him ;-)

Sure, get good enough, go to Paris, Venice, or other parts of Italy and entertain all the tourist, playing all the great classics out there. Wonderful sound, lots of romantic melodies can be played on them. Go for it

French music...

Tango music...

Polkas and lots more...But romantic French music would be great to learn

If all else fails, get you a monkey and stand on the street corner playing for money

Accordions don't exude 'hipness' like some other instruments, but having a musical creative outlet can't be a bad thing IMHO. It's a bulky instrument to tote around to jam with, so I'd weight that in making the decision. I favor guitars, but it's a personal choice.
