whatever, go on with your totalitarian view of life that you can't crack certain jokes because they're "offensive". everything is offensive to someone. if you were going around telling everyone they shouldn't do something because it's offensive, we'd all be in boxes closed off from the rest of the world to avoid "offending" people

Yup; my friend use to do that, it makes him feel like he has the upper hand before some else points out he is fat. I don't like it.

Yes, that is very common. It eases the sting and takes the power away from the person who was going to do it. You attack yourself before they can hurt you.

Its kind of sad really.

I love the overweight, I find myself more attracted to an overweight person than i am to a skinny person. but it's not about a "defence mechinism" I just believe that everything is ok to make fun of. otherwise nothing is ok to joke about. It's all or nothing

No and I think making comments about skinny people is just as bad. Some people are hateful of fat people, they think they are lazy and whatever but no one enjoys being on the extreme side of fat or skinny. We need to all be more respectful of everyone.

I would NEVER make fun of those who are 'fat'. Having said that, I believe it is only fair to point out that many-not ALL -but certainly many many obese people are, as they say, "The author of their own misfortune." (!) In other words they seem often to be unable -or unwilling-to exercise the needed discipline to:(1) consume less calories; and (2) Exercise more and by so doing 'burn' more calories and thereby rid themselves of a lot of unwanted and unecessary flab!

Sometimes fat people can't help how they look, sometimes they're born that way because of their parents being fat. I think making fun of any body is plain mean, enough said.

This is very true. I myself am guilty. However, to me it is one of the few "groups" of people that it is still considered to be OK. The same people would never make fun of handicapped people, or people who got cancer from smoking, or black people. Yet Fat people are a legit target I think.

I am aware; that's probably because obesity is often seen as the result of pure gluttony, as opposed to possible genetics or medical conditions.

Insecure people probably look at fat people and think "Oh, well they did that to themselves, so that makes it alright to be mean and nasty about it."

I know. Being overweight tends to be a genetic trait, but even if it were true, we don't make fun of people with emphysema or lung cancer because they smoked.

People are just cruel I think.

What is wrong with you? If I find it disgusting but don't say anything, I believe that is honest and pretty decent. What would be wrong is what the question is asking about, and that is making fun of being fat, especially with a comment to the person. I wouldn't do that.
