Since the majority of Americans are against gay marriage - as demonstrated convincingly at the ballot box, not in biased polls - he is going against the majority without providing clear leadership on the issue. Not a good combination politically.

I don't think it will help or hurt him really on balance. Some might be turned off by his support and others might now support him who didn't, but overall... no change.

The people who are for gay marriage were going to vote for him anyway, but many who would have voted for him will now have second thoughts. He may also have lost some more of the independent voters that voted for him before.
