Do you put your Christmas tree up before or after Thanksgiving?

Growing up the tree was always put up the day after Thanksgiving and I continue with that tradition. Sometimes the following day and sometimes shortly after but never before Thanksgiving. Holidays have become so rushed and run into each other there's not time to enjoy one before the stores and people start on the next one. I think if people stopped to take the given breathers in between they wouldn't feel so overwhelmed!

This year I'm hosting Thanksgiving so the tree won't go up until probably the following Monday. But if I'm going someplace for Thanksgiving then I will put it up before. We always turn our outside Christmas lights on Thanksgiving evening.

I know I sound boring, but we really don't celebrate any of these festivals or events. (except Halloween of course)

Right now, we've got a two week vacation for one of the local festivals called Diwali which is celebrated because in Indian mythology, the day when Lord Ram returns from his exile, people eveywhere rejoiced and lit small earthenware candles called 'diyas' and celebrated him coming back. It doesn't make a difference to my family because my mom is the only person who is a theist in our family.

I've always been under the impression that religion was a big deal in your country and it wasn't until you and I started talking that I realized otherwise. And thank you for that bit of info! :)

It is kind of a big deal actually, in fifth grade when I used to tell people I don't believe in god, they used to look at me like I was mad. Now people have become more liberal; nonetheless, my mom too was quite mad at me when she heard me telling my dad I don't believe in god. It is a REALLY big deal for people who are orthodox here but I guess it's really not going to change what I believe irrespective of what people enforce on me.

It goes up around the second week of December. Everything pretty much happens at once, tree, outside lights, lawn Santa and sled. Here's something else that was passed down in my wife's family... it's bad luck to have two Christmas trees in one year. Come hell or high water, that tree is down on Jan. 1 .

Last year I painted one room in stone rocks to look like a castle and the other room I hung Star Wars the Clone wars wallpaper to decorate their rooms for a christmas present. They've been wonderful kids throughout the divorce and changing schools and friends. I just want to do things that will help create happy memories for them.

You're a wonderful Mom, and they are blessed to have you! I've been in these positions as well and it's not easy but so many parents fail to think of the impact it has on the kids, just assuming they will be ok with it all, or frankly not caring. Good for you, they will appreciate it and certainly realize the lengths you went to.

It's a given, I think, because we do want the best for them and we have been told time and time again (by society, family, friends, or others) that includes the perfect scenario of mom, dad, kids... so when that changes (even when we know it must) we feel terrible. We certainly don't go into it with the mindset that it'd be anything less than forever.... sadly people don't realize that. Important thing, you're a strong woman & Mother.
