In my office, 4 years ago a lottery pool was started. Everybody who was in put in $2 per week. If they won small (less than $50) they put the winnings back in to buy more tickets rather than split a small amount 6 ways. Once they won $100, so they each took $10 and used the remaining $40 to buy more tickets. Every other week they either won nothing, or got $3-$10 which they reinvested by buying more tickets with the winnings. So in 4 years each individual spent $400 so they could pocket $10.
I took the same $2 per week, bought a paper with it, clipped coupons, and saved on average about $50 per week on groceries. In 4 years that comes to about $10,000 less that I have paid on groceries.
They are out $400, I have saved $10,000. Who's investment of $2 per week has performed better?
