Do you pay for a cell phone or get one of the free ones?

I didn't even want a phone, but my son was getting into lots of trouble at school and I was not always home to take care of it. So I signed up for a phone that I got for free with free minutes every month because I am poor. It does not take pictures, or video, or music, or gps or the internets or anything like that. It makes and receives calls and texts, which I don't make because I have no need to text people. I can also play Sudoku.

I have a contract phone from AT&T; and I am happy with it, sometimes my Blackberry annoys me, but hell sometimes I annoy myself. I have done the prepaid and honestly, for what I do they were a waste of money, and anything from verizon is a waste of money. I don't take handouts so I don't and won't know about those "free" phones other than I am footing the bill for it

I'm not sure what you mean by "free". The phone I have along with my wife and daughter are technically "free" providing we pay for a two year contract. Not really free.

If you mean the phones given to the disabled and sick, then nope. I may be "getting along" but I'm not that bad off yet!

Are you talking about the Obama free phone? I wouldn't have one even if I couldn't afford a phone. I am on a plan at At&T.; Get a great discount on my phones. My Atrix2 was only $29.00.

I hasve done both,and I'm currently waiting for five months from now when I'll be eligible to get an upgrade from the free phone I got from US Cellular. Then my current cell phone will become the greatly desired property of my granddaughter,who can hardly wait! :-)))

I have a plan with Vodafone which for $45 per month gives me unlimited free calls to land lines and mobiles throughout Australia. It also gives me unlimited texts, MMS, PXT anywhere in the world, plus 500 Meg of data (internet). I chose with it a Nokia N8 smart phone, which costs my an additional $5 per month. It would have been free on a higher cap plan. I'm happy with the deal.

I have Verizon and I have a plan, where I have good usage in town or out of town, I do not text. When I was a kid, I use to hear my Dad say you get what you pay for, and the free phones are just not functional for me.

Neither! I a ovoid cell phones like the plague for the sake of health because of the microwaves, I value my health too much to subject myself to microwaves.

I recently bought my own phone but my parents agreed to pay my bill til i'm 18 :) the cool thing is it's a prepaid so i can pay whatever i want whenever. :)

It depends on what I need. The free ones usually make good spares as the expensive ones tend to break down.

I pay---and it makes me damn angry that a whole of folks get theirs free, meaning WE pay for it. The "free" phone ought to be limited to calling 911 and other NECESSARY number. They should NOT allowed to use airtime WE pay for to call their grandchildren (as one commercial shows).

This is just another example of those who work paying for ours AND for those whose are not willing to work.

I don't have a cellphone, so I was unable to choose one of the two answers. But as far as I know, there is no such thing as "free," for SOMEONE has to pay for it.
