They are still within reach for me. Although our local one shut down years ago there is still a few close by. If I had enough money to start a business it would be a drive-in. I'd make it look old-fashioned but it would be more modern. Better bathrooms and food for a start, lol!
We had one in my hometown my whole life but a couple of years ago they shut it down. Because the owner of the land didnt want it to be a drive in anymore. So now it just sits, rotting away. Makes me kinda sad I miss watching 2 movies for $5.
My parents never took me when I was a kid, but my wife and I went once in awhile when the kids were young (they're 40 and 38 now !!). It was fun.
I remember one drive-in (long gone now) in Bartonsville, PA that converted over to porn movies. You could park your car on a little road on the east side of 611 and watch from there for free. Of course, there was no sound---but, if you were lucky, you might to make your own !
I miss going to themLol!
We have them - well one ... but we never get out to it now ... about 4 mths back, but it would be years prior that!
A pity because we used to get up to male-female mischief ROFL ROFL!! ;)
I have to say that living were I do we have access to a drive-in within 40 min. We do go a few times during the season. there was also another one still open near one of our lake vacation resort areas, I have not been there in a while so not sure if still open. Drive-ins are a great way to spend an evening with a loved one or a group of friends.
They could be kinda fun. Although , the last years of the drive-in in my area saw the remaining 2 drive-ins become porno drive-ins. I remember a drive-in that would now be located quite close to me. It was the Twin-Aire Drive-In. It was 2 very large drive-ins located side by side with heaters you could place in your car window. Unlike many drive-ins , it was usually kept in very good condition (all speakers and heaters kept operational) and the concession stand was also kept in good condition. Today , it is a Walmart strip mall.
When I was a kid it was fun to go with the parents and try to stay awake for the whole movie. When I was in high school it was a blast when they charged 5 dollars per car & the car would be jammed with me & my friends.
There is still one or two around but there a good 45 minutes to an hour away.
When I was a kid, we would wear our pajamas and take pillows and blanets. There were 2 or 3 movies and cartoons in one night. My dad wouuld watch them all. It was so much fun. Then, as a teenager, it was about the only place to go.
GlendaC - Our family did the same thing! Jammies, blankets, pillows - what a blast we had! And do you remember the "spotlight game" before the cartoons, newsreels and movies? Drivers putting on their spot lights and trying to "catch" the little whatever-it-was on the screen? Only thing was, if we went in our jammies we couldn't go on the swings and stuff. You surely brought back some great memories! Thank you :)
I practically grew up at the 40 east drive-in theater and I miss it and drive-ins are an era that is all but lost in America and it is so sad to see them go
