What relevant purpose does a genetically modified hairless cat serve?
If you are thinking companionship and emotional bonding, wouldn't the energy wasted on companionship and emotional bonding be better spent on companionship and bonding with humans? Why does the car owner place a higher value on the time and money spend with their cat than on other humans who are in desperate need of that same time, money and emotional bonding? Why does the cat owner think that their pet cat is more important and more deserving of those resources (time, money, etc) than humans like the elderly, the homeless or orphaned children?

My cat has brought more joy to my life than any human being ever has. You don't have to like cats. That's your opinion. But to say that we are wasting our time and energy on them? That's just ridiculous.
Ridiculous? When you spend money on your cat, you are making a decision that the money spend is going to go toward a cat instead of something else, like a person. Your decision to spend that money, time and energy on a cat instead of spending that money, time and energy on a human being is what is ridiculous regardless of how much pleasure you receive from your cat. That is no different than saying, "I'm going to spend all my time, energy and money on smoking pot instead of helping those people who are in desperate need of help because smoking pot brings me joy."
Pet owners will be playing with their pets while the world burns.
