I just came across one by accident on Youtube and it made me sick to my stomach, they dip the hotdogs in water and jam down their throats.

I think that it is disgusting to watch personally. I have never seen the Coney Island contest myself but I ate there once and saw someone who I could only assume was training for it. Even watching someone just get ready for it looked disgusting to me. In my opinion food is supposed to be enjoyed, not to be shoved down your throat to the point of possibly vomiting or choking. I am a human being, not a vacuum cleaner.

Everytime I think of those, this stuff comes to mind.

I actually went to the hotdog eating contest at Nathans in Brooklyn a few years ago. Perhaps the most unappetizing thing I have ever seen. It was the dipping in water thing that grossed me out also. :-(

I have seen it, but I don't make it a point to watch it. They should change the rule and make it so you have to eat the hotdog as it was intended to be eaten. Bun and all, no separating it and dipping the bun in water. To me that is cheating. You can drink water in between dogs to wash it down, but no bun-dipping. That is the AMERICAN way.

Nope, like you I unwittingly saw one once, that's not real hotdog eating. They should have to at least put the sausage on the bun and then eat it. The way they do it is such a pointless mass of calories. Wouldn't even taste good.
