I'm now very used to them. I went to a popular drugstore chain out of state the other day and I was shocked that they didn't have a self-scan. I had to wait forever because the cashier was chatting with the customer. Not opposed to chatting, but I was in a hurry.

I don't want attendants to lose work because I don't want the world to be run by machines. But on the other hand, I do use them if I'm in a hurry or if there are super long lines in the store.

yes, I agree with you.... but, sometimes they can take just about as long as the lines....

I like them. I'm in and out faster if I have few items. If I have a lot of items, I prefer a checker.

I think you are right about the cigarettes and alcohol; a checker has to oversee the self checkout.

I will normally avoid them except maybe if it's only a couple of items. Actually the attendants can usually fix the problems that arise. But I don't like them either.

The reason for them would be a savings in labor costs, which means better prices.

May be that one day stores will be run by robots, and there will be jobs for robot-builders?

When you're checking out your own groceries you certainly can't complain you have a grumpy cashier!

One thing I don't like about them is too many selfish idiots with a whole basket full of items go through the self-check line rather than a regular one with a bagger. For people with a few items, it seems asinine this clod could hold up the line for so long and not care about anyone else.

And the mechanical voice that tells everyone in the store when you fail to do something exactly how and when the machine wants it done.

But they have gotten better.
I used to call them the 98% failures.
Now I only call them the 90+% failures.

Sometimes its okay when the scanner works corretly. Stores never hire enough cashiers or not enough cashiers during busy hours and days.

They do take a bit of getting used to and warming up to. If you're going to buy age restricted stuff then don't bother, but if you just need a few items, it's all I ever use. When I want a gallon of milk, I don't want to stand behind 5 people and listen to disputes over 3 cents on an expired coupon. For most of my shopping needs, they're much faster and get me out of the store quicker. I have better things to do than be stuck at the grocery store.
