Definitely scary, though your receptors and synapses triggered and simply (most likely) "arranged" to where it's a pleasing scent. Just avoid it and don't inhale! Most the time, gas attendants offer to pump my gas just in general so I'm glad I rarely have to do that (my car also gets great gas mileage so refilling is infrequent).
