I think it's difficult to carry off the more casual bowties without looking like a dork or a nerd, but a black or white bowtie with a tux looks very snazzy (especially with French cuffs and cufflinks), and being able to tie one properly gives me a great sense of accomplishment. I don't approve of clip-ons on anyone old enough to tie his own shoes.
They look nice, and they don't get in your food or machinery like neckties do. My dad loved them. Always get a self-tie. It is a valuable skill to know how to tie a bowtie. Clip-ons are cheating. Besides, when the night gets late and you untie it and unbuttton the top two buttons of your shirt, it looks sexy.
I hate them with a passion, the only time I'd stomach wearing one is with a tuxedo. I hate seeing people wearing them just to wear them, bow ties annoy me that much. Don't know why.
They're a touch of "class" in their own unique opportunities and a challenge for a male to to tie them perfectly so they compliment the rest of his apparel. It's like opening the door for a woman who knows to wait first for a male to extend her that courtesy, just like walking with a woman, on the outside of the sidewalk, next to the street.
People that wear bowties are trying to make them selves look smart or more academia.
It doesn't work, you look like a pompous ass. I almost don't trust people that wear bowties, because I think they're trying to be something their not...In other words, their pretending...
The obvious exception to my rule is a tuxedo...looks great!!!
"He was speaking THE TRUTH!"
They're nice on certain occasions, but annoying Whovians are ruining them by whering them to Tesco/Walmart.
