Ugh, no, it's gross. I'll take any alcoholic beverage but that. Was it your first time drinking? That may be why you found it so nasty. No one really likes the taste at first, you ease into it. Try making mixes (vodka+Sprite, coke+rum, etc). Those are usually delicious but also have the kick :)
It depends what sort it is and what temperature it is served at.
There are literally thousands of types of beers, some made from wheat. some from malt, some from hops, or any combination of the three. Some even have fruit added.
Young people in the UK quite often start by drinking shandy half beer and half clear fizzy lemonade...
Well that's American beer for you. Beer generally does have an after taste. However, you'll find that if you get a real ale from the UK (rare) it's damn good. One of the best and I hate beer is an old very rich ale called Spingo served often in Cornwall.
Now when I say I hate beer, I won't touch a drop. The exception to the rule is spingo, I will quite happily sit there all afternoon with a glass of it. It has a rich, mature flavour but it doesn't have that horrible bite that normal UK beers have, the sugary weakness of the American type or the ...well I'm not necessarily sure what they do to their beer's in Europe, but it's not good I can tell you that much.
The best place to enjoy Spingo, is not in a pub, but rather outside overlooking a lake or river if at all possible, especially after a walk. Make sure to drink lots of water, it will knock you for six if you've only ever drank standard brands.
