Never heard of either bad or good luck for keeping a tree up ... always kept it into the new year when I was growing up ... do the same now if I put one up ... but the, I'm not the superstitious type.

I never heard anything about it being bad or good luck. But my family always kept the tree up until New Year's day. It was taken down at midnight, Jan 2nd.

It comes down when I have the time to take it down.
I wonder if the "it's bad luck to leave your tree up until after the New Year" thing was because real trees dry out and are more easily set on fire by then?

Well there are 2 different sides to this discussion...if you are Christian, the "religious" belief as to why you should leave it up until after the new year is this...

**Christian tradition tells us that Jesus was born on December 25, but the Magi did not arrive in Bethlehem until January 6. According to the traditions of man, January 6 is the Epiphany - sometimes called "Little Christmas..." or "Little Epiphany" - and is the day the Magi met the newborn King and presented him with his royal gifts. It is explained to children that, if you take down your lights before January 6, the Wise Men may not be able to find their way, even though all the Christmas lights in the world, combined, would not be as bright as the star God used to guide them.

If you are not "religious" and are just superstitious this is the rule of thumb:

**It is said, that if you leave your tree up past the new year, you are bringing the past year into the new one, which is unlucky. So...i guess it is just up to what you believe. lol

I never heard of luck being an issue. I love my tree. It's so beautiful. I'm so busy during pre-Christmas that I don't really have time to enjoy it, so I like leaving it up a while to have my chance to enjoy it. When I had a real tree, I had the idea of leaving it up all year and decorating it for the season/occasion. When it became dry, I'd strip off the needles and spray the branches white. On Valentine's Day, I'd decorate with hearts; on St. Patty's Day, it would be four-leaf clovers and leprechauns; Easter--Easter egg; in the spring, flowers, then flags for July 4th, pumpkins for Halloween. Then take it down and start afresh with a new tree for Christmas.

I don't believe in good-luck or bad-luck. But I do normally take down the tree right after New Years Day. One year I didn't take it down right away and tripped over the cord for the lights, which caused the tree to fall on the dog, which caused the dog to run out of the room, tripping grandma on the way out, who had a hot dish of soup in her hands that spilled all over grandpa who suffered 3rd degree burns. Well, we all ended up going to the hospital, where there was a break out of the flu, and yep, you guessed it, three days later we were all sick in bed for a week! However, as a result we were all immune to that strain of the flu and could not get it again. So, a few years later when that strain came back around, none of us caught it, when the whole entire town came down with it. And they came down with it, the weekend of the Holbert Town Fair. And this was not just any fair, no no no. It was the fair that had a raffle for $100,000.00 worth of prizes, including a new home make-over. Well, when we went to the fair we were the only people there from our town, with all of those out of town carnies. And it was one of those carnies that ran our town's raffle. And well, considering we were the only one's there, we won that raffle and got that make-over and all the other prizes.

    Now...

Now some people might call that dumb luck. But the people in Holbert call it one big giant made up story!

make-over prizes people dumb luck people holbert giant story
