The Grand Old Duke of York
He had ten thousand men
He marched them up to the top of the hill and he marched them down again
And when they were up, they were up,
And when they were down, they were down
And when they were only half way up, they were neither up nor down.
There was a crooked man and he walked a crooked mile, He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse, And they all lived together in a little crooked house.
Guten Abend, gute Nacht,
mit Rosen bedacht,
mit Näglein besteckt,
schlüpf unter die Deck:
Morgen früh, wenn Gott will,
wirst du wieder geweckt,
morgen früh, wenn Gott will,
wirst du wieder geweckt.
Guten Abend gute Nacht,
von Englein bewacht,
die zeigen im Traum
dir Christkindleins Baum:
Schlaf nur selig und süß,
schau im Traum's Paradies,
schlaf nur selig und süß,
schau im Traum's Paradies.
English translation:
Good evening, good night,
Bedecked with roses,
Adorned with cloves*,
Slip under the covers.
Tomorrow morn, if God wills,
You'll awake once again.
Tomorrow morn, if God wills,
You'll awake once again.
Good evening, good night,
Little angels watch over;
In a dream they show
You a Christmas tree.
Sleep only blessed and sweet,
See paradise in your dream.
Sleep only blessed and sweet,
See paradise in your dream
Hey diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle, the cow jumped over the moon. The little dog laughed just to see such sport, and the dish ran away with the spoon.
I love nonsense.
When I was One, I had just begun.
When I was Two, I was nearly new.
When I was Three, I was hardly Me.
When I was Four, I was not much more.
When I was Five, I was just alive.
But now I am Six, I'm clever as clever.
So I think I'll be six now and for ever and ever.
In the great green room there was a telephone And a red balloon And a picture of-- The cow jumping over the moon and there were three little bears, sitting on chairs and two little kittens and a pair of mittens and a little toy house and a young mouse and a comb and a brush and bowl full of mush and a quiet old lady who was whispering "hush"
Goodnight room goodnight moon goodnight cow jumping over the moon goodnight light and the red balloon goodnight bears goodnight chairs goodnight kittens goodnight mittens goodnight clocks and goodnight socks goodnight little house and goodnight mouse goodnight comb and goodnight brush goodnight nobody goodnight mush and goodnight to the old lady whispering "hush" goodnight stars, goodnight air goodnight noises everywhere.

i read this to the kids so many times i think i'll remember it forever!!!
and yes, it's not one of the "Mother Goose Rhymes", but it is a rhyme and i read it to the kids in "the nursery", i.e., their bedrooms, when they were in bed.

I love nonsense.
Silly Jill forgot the pill, and now they have a son."
A variation of it is this...
"Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water.
Silly Jill forgot the pill, and now they have a daughter."
His wife could eat no lean
And so betwixt the two of them
They licked the platter clean
When I was Two, I was nearly new.
When I was Three, I was hardly Me.
When I was Four, I was not much more.
When I was Five, I was just alive.
But now I am Six, I'm clever as clever.

How does your garden grow?
With silver bells, and cockle shells,
And pretty maids all in a row.
When my mother said that to me, she meant that I was being a brat.
there was a telephone
And a red balloon
And a picture of--
