    I always thought "I'll fix you something." was kind of strange. It's like when we go to restaurants and say, "Could I have..." Of course, you could... but is it what you want? How about "May I have..." or "I'll have..."

    We members of the Grammar Police Force do notice those things! I suppose in the restaurant it is valid to say "could I have" since they sometimes run out of things and one might be told, "no you can't". LOL

    It's an American term. I think probably southern in origin. It's an alternative to "make".

    My wife does most of the cooking but I can turn my hand to it too if need be. I always imagined that to fix a meal was an American expression.

    Yes, it is often used that way. It seems to be a synonym for "assemble". But it also gets used for planning, as in "I'm fixin' to get me a sandwich."

    A fix is also used for drugs (including caffeine) , cigarettes, alcohol but that's pretty universal I think.
