I only feel sorry for the ones that ended up homeless because of something that they could not control, like someone ruining their life.

I feel bad that they are in that situation, but sometimes its hard to when they are homeless because they won't ask for help

I always feel sorry for homeless people. They got their through either mental illness or being just plain stupid.

Feel sorry for them does not mean I am willing to "help" them because I do believe that helping them is very harmful for them. Enabling is the psychological concept. Subsidizing is the economic concept.

Yes I do. Perhaps it has to do with living in a city of over 8 Million and a density of over 26.000 per square mile, but I do my best in helping when the opportunity arises. After all, studies over at least 2 decades have shown that the average American is but just over 2 1/2 months away from losing everything were they to loose their paychecks. A rather sobering figure!

Not a pessimist. It's just most that I know, usually walked over somebody to get where they are. Me, I hope for the best, expect the worst, and take what comes.

Depends on the situation, how they got homeless, weather it was there own fault and could have avoided being made homeless..

I feel very sorry for them simply because they don't even have the basics to survive and live miserable lives. I feel guilty when I walk past one knowing that perhaps I should have given them some change. The ones I feel most sorry for are the retired war soldiers or people injured in war who are just forgotten about, so instead of resting their lives are just getting worse. Also, homeless children are even sadder to see because their lives have barely started yet.
On the flipside, there are homeless people who could have easily avoided the situation, like drug abusers (the ones who don't bother trying to kick the habit), drinkers and many other problems that could be avoided with a little help. Generally, I prefer to get a homeless person food instead of giving money in fear they might spend the money on drugs.

I actually feel very sorry for homeless people-what an absolutely miserable existence they must lead. Many will be very uncharitable and scathing in their criticism of the homeless
" All their own fault" I can hear them saying: "if only they did this or that.." etc,etc ad nauseum
All of that is probably true in the majority of those who find themselves on the streets
However, where such people are concerned I am a great believer in the old truth:
"There but for the Grace of God go I." (!!) there but for the grace of god go i

I do. 1/3 of them have a serious mental illness like schizophrenia. It doesn't matter how they became homeless, they are our fellow Americans and they deserve our empathy at a minimum.

I don't feel sorry for those who are there because of drug habitats, refusal to get a job, or because that is how they prefer to live. I do feel bad for those who have no other options and are trying to find a way out.

Some prefer it that way. So for them I don't feel sorry. Some are homeless solely because the economy is so bad right now. They don't drink or do drugs, they may even have jobs (or kids!) Those I do feel for.

Often not, especially after occasions of speaking to "homeless" people. The funny thing is, I live in California now, which is a state bloated with government programs designed to "fight poverty" and "prevent homelessness". I've never lived in a state prior to this, in which there were so many people on the street begging for money. If ever there was a culture of victimization, entitlement, and pure laziness, this is it. It's so easy to collect various forms of government assistance here, that people would rather beg on the street for non-taxabe income, so as not to lose their government assistance by getting an actual job.
