in some way ... there are many levels of friendship. If you like a person and you can talk with them about your problems or your joys and you can give or recive some advice why not?

Only a small number of them though.

Not really. True friends are hard to find, and it's very unlikely to find a true friend online. You might think they're your friend, but in reality that might not be the case. People throw the word "friend" around like they do the word "love." Love is rare and so is true friendship.

I'm a physical person. For me to consider a person a friend I need to be able to actually see and touch them, otherwise I am incapable of bonding with a person to the point of friendship. I won't even consider a person in real life a friend until I've made some physical contact with them.

I know nothing of people's personal lives from this site and choose to share no substantial details of mine.

Some of them definitely are. Others are acquaintances. It's not really much different from something like a school or workplace environment where you might be acquainted with a large number of people and even chat with them every day but the depth of your knowledge about each other, or your fondness for each other varies.

SOME on the computer I do. 2 of my friends are coming to see me this week, after knowing them on the computer for over 4 years. They threw my daughter a "cyber baby shower" when my daughter was pregnant.

I don't know anyone on the computer, but if you actually invested the time(which I haven't) in trying to build a solid friendship, then they can be. It's hard enough to make really good friends offline, so I don't think online is any easier. People tend to come and go more quickly online though.

It des take time. After 4 years of communicating on the internet and phone I am finally meeting 2 friends this week. Well worth the wait.

It does take time, but on the internet some rush to call someone a friend without really knowing the person. I hope all goes well(after four years...It will). :)

I talk to people here, but I don't really know them. If you take the time to really get to know someone on the internet...It could lead to a lasting friendship.

I haven't ever took the time to really get to know someone online, but I will treat people online, the same way I treat people offline, and if someone ever considered me a friend(online); I'll try to give them comforting words in their time of need.

I consider them internet friends. I may be close to them online but I am unable to spark a real friendship with someone I will never meet face to face. I have my real friends and they aren't online.

    Nice!

Met one of my best buddies from an online forum years ago. And I've met pretty interesting folks thru the net, so it's not that impossible to make friends via computer.

If we share the same view of certain issues that I consider important, like limited Federal government, or if we both enjoy some of the same TV shows, or same music artists, then I consider the person a "kindred spirit" (in other words, a friend). :D

But it's more like the friends you see at the bar where you sit around, have a few drinks and tell lies. Not the same type of friends that you consider life long buddies.

Its much more like good acquaintances.

Becoming 'rock solid buddies' takes time and work.

Yes, in a manner of speaking. They're actually "virtual" friends.
