Do you censor a 9 year olds music?

I have a 9 year old god daughter, she likes most of what I like, if she comes round, she will often put something on to listen to it, she knows bad language & not to use it, if she doesn't understand the song, she asks & I tell her, I used to be very cautious, her parents were the same, but if she comes to my place, I don't own a TV so it's music or nothing, so she listens to the radio, CD, tape or record, we realized that you can't hide it from them, so she's allowed to listen to anything, if she doesn't hear it in front of one of us, she'll hear it somewhere else

Yes…there may be adult content lyrics which they don’t understand and you wouldn’t want them running around singing…lol I’ll never forget when I was 9 I heard a teenage neighbour boy call his little brother a dildo. I didn’t have a clue what that meant but judging by the context in which it was used I assumed it meant idiot. So that very next opportunity I had to use this new word on my little brother I did. Unfortunately I used it in front of my father. I thought he was going to explode…lol He wanted to know where I heard that word and if I knew what it meant so I said who I heard it from and that it meant idiot. I was duly informed it did NOT mean idiot and I was never to say that word again. It wasn’t until many many years later I found out what that word meant..lol

If I had a nine year old I would. But then again, my step-grandson used to listen to the most disgusting gangsta rap out there. I just knew he was a lost cause. But, he is getting his masters degree at the University of AZ, working as a councillor for the University and is a very well rounded young man. He speaks 7 languages, has been to China, and SAm. I am very proud of him.

Nope. They will listen to it anyway. Better to tell them what you like or dislike about certain songs, types of music and particular entertainers. Give your child an informed opinion on the content, especially if you're concerned about the content.

Kids who have older siblings will latch onto catch lyrics not realizing what they are saying. It's NOT cute. One of the most offensive things I've ever seen is a little girl singing "I Like Big Butts...." C'mon, let them be kids and shield them from the tawdry side of things.

Hell Yes! we censor everything based on our kids ages and what we think they are ready for.

They mite see or hear objectional things elsewhere, but we want them to understand that we disaprove and why.

But there is no doubt I would keep him away from rap, because most of it seems to be foul.

I don't have any kids but if I did I would censor their music for certain bad words or ideas. At a certain age I would stop it... that age would probably depend on how good I thought the kids would handle it.

Absolutely!!! A 9 year old is a child, and much music today has way too adult a theme (sex and/or violence) for a child.
