But I understand how the concept can be so real to other people. I used to sincerely believe that M & M Land was real. (You know, the place with the chocolate swimming pool and the candy coating showers.) I begged my parents to go there for our vacation and they could NOT convince me that it wasn't a real place. I'd seen it on TV after all...but I digress.
Hel is one of the nine realms it is ruled by the Goddess hel. It is a realm for those that die a quiet death, they live in restful peace waiting for the period of rebirth that follows Ragnorak, and for those that bring dishonor on their names(through the breaking of oaths, the raping of virgins, etc...) there is a part of Hel called Niflhel. In niflhel those the Gods deem in need of punishment are chained to rocks and the venom of vipers is dripped into their eyes.
If you ask me, I don't think bad people go to hell when they die. They get sent back to earth, in order to experience another life in our miserable world.
I am not religious at all, but looked into this when I was studying the typical questions one might have about the bible. We can thank Dante for most of the common misconceptions out there about hell. I read a few papers regarding the background of hell and how it was interpreted in the Torah and then later gospels. This site actually has a pretty good breakdown based on Judeo-Christian philosophy/translations.
God said he made hell for the devil and his angels! If we go there it will be because we chose to reject his offer of salvation written down for us in the bible. There will be no excuse(s) accepted in judgement day. He is calling out to everyone but he knows that everyone will not accept his offer.
I like to think that at the end of life their is some sort of place where those who have done serious harm and horrible deeds without remorse are punished for their betrayal to humanity. So a hell? yes? a specific kind like biblical not so sure, could be
Ummm...since there is no evidence whatsoever to support any claim about the various hell like places that have existed in the various faiths people have created through out human history; I've never been able to make myself afraid of something nobody has ever shown to be real.
As the current versions of hell in the main faiths today seem oddly similar to previous accounts from older religions that people who never read anything but their own scripture have forgotten about, and or were told was a lie.
I think hell is more a product of man than it is religion. Hell is the grave in the Bible, or else hell and death wouldn't be thrown into the lake of fire. Anyway, I don't believe in the hell that writers have come up with. I do believe in the grave though. :)
thats y i dont check out ,cause if i do itl be worse

Of course if you're background is not Christian, then your perspective on hell may be completely different, but that is the one I am addressing.

Hell is a DMV line in California.
