I feel it's hypocritical for us to limit nuclear weapons, especially considering all the testing we did inside and outside of this country. If we have them, we can NOT expect other countries to not.

...we have them...who are we to say someone else CAN'T have them, and who can blame them...remember, we aren't the worldwide "good guys" any more; we just spent the last ten years occupying Iraq for the express purpose of taking what they have...

No country has the right to a weapon that can kill hundreds upon thousands of innocents, kill all The bad guys you want (in war) but leave the innocents alone.
The bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima is one of the greatest atrocities of war IMHO.

Nuclear weapons are not conducive to the survival of humans thus I believe no nation has a right to own them or even needs them to include us. We have plently of conventinal weaponary that can be used with deadly precision there is no need for such a destructive weapon that leaves the planet scared for decades afterwards. And how hypocritical of us to tell others they can't have them when we alone have enough to kill the entire planets population(to include non-humans) a hundred times over and we're the only ones in the history of the world to have ever deployed nukes in war and we did so in highly populated civilian areas on purpose.

Medieval religious or fanatical political indoctrinated governments should earn their right for mankind survival's sake. Imagine ancient catholic crusaders, Hitler, Bin Laden or countries that currently promote suicidal bombers with such weaponry.

I believe no country has a right to nuclear weapons. Too bad that sensible position is not embraced by the big 3 USA, Russia, China, that probably could force it.

If I'm being completely honest, I think nobody should have them. But since that option was off the table years ago, then I think if one nation has them, everyone has the right to arm/defend themselves as they see fit. The U.S. and its allies have a lot of nerve, telling other countries what they can and can't do, when they themselves are sitting on a stockpile that could destroy the world hundreds of times over.

    Absolutely not.

I believe those that respect the right to life of others should be heavily armed and should rarely use force.

I believe that totalitarian regimes with a history of violent assaults against personal liberties should be completely disarmed.

They are sovereign nations, beholding to and controlled by none. While our Declaration of Independence is ours and ours alone, it's principals, by the very words it contains, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that ALL men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.", MUST apply to ALL peoples, or they ring hollow. I would prefer of course that none existed. Unfortunately the time for keeping the toothpaste in the tube is about 67 years past.

Does anyone really need a nuke in the first place?
Nukes are like get rich quick schemes, they sound great on paper until everyone else is doing the same thing and it just blows up in your face.

Exactly. If memory serves we are the only country to every have deployed nukes and we did so in areas of high civilian populations so just looking at history I can understand why other nations would want to arm themselves with nukes.

We aren't the only ones who have tested, but the only ones to use in war. There is a YouTube video (I think I posted it in a question of mine here) that shows all the places used for testing.... It's no wonder there are birth defects and more cancers.

When I said "deployed" I meant in a purely military manner. I'm fully aware of how us and russia in particular carried out hundreds of test of nuclear weapons in "remote" areas. Like anything can be considered "remote" when talking about nukes.

Not one country in my opinion should have such weapons. If a country happens to acquire this weapon, tension among the nations arises, this would eventually lead to something that may harm parties that are not involed in such matters.

Valid point, I think I can see what you mean by that.

My point is simple... no country should have them, we're like toddlers in a play pen and a few of us have the biggest shaker toys/batons.

Our technologies have evolved way too fast for our social structures to catch up.
  • George-2 apostate 2012/05/17 16:41:12

You're absolutely right. We're dealing with technology way beyond current human capacity to manage the best of it. Even well balanced democratic nations could end up resorting to nuclear weapons if military circumstances go out of control.
