It may be just a matter of simple physiology. Most single men on average are younger men and as a result have better hearing. As people age their hearing ability tends to diminish and most married men, on average are older. This is just a fact of life so to speak. Psychology also plays a part as well. Men and women, contrary to pop cultural brainwashing attempts, are different, always have been and always will be. Women have a tendency to talk topics to death and as a defense mechanism men will tend to tune out especially if they're focused on a something particular at the time.

LOL - the desire to get into pants of new lady is directly connected to ears; once goal attained hearing diminishes. However, hearing of married males is still greatly affected by phrases such as; "I'm horny," "come to bed", "you are still sexy after all these years, come here." and so on.
