I think only bettas make good fish pets. They have personality and can be trained to jump through hoops (they are excellent jumpers) follow your finger, and can even learn their own name. I see all of the people on here are like "IT'S NOT CUDDLY!1!1!1!1!1" dogs aren't always cuddly, they can kill you if REALLY provoked. You don't have a problem there with fish. You can't walk a fish or pet them but a dog can't breathe under water while a fish can. Dogs are noisy, messy, and aggressive a lot of the time and will eat you if you don't feed it for a week. Fish are quiet and will just go with it if you don't feed them. So you can't pet them? Big deal! Animals shouldn't be touched all the damn time anyways. Bettas don't like you just for your food, most bettas love their owners because most bettas are rescued from dirty cups and put into clean tanks by THEIR OWNER. Rescued by THEIR OWNER. Bettas do listen if you speak to them. Half of the time. Mine goes up to the corner of the tank (by where I sleep) and rests there or watches me for a little while. And before you say fish only like you for food, dogs half of the time only like you for food.
(They would hate you if you didn't feed them! Fish will still like you) in my opinion, fish have heart and brain and a spine, they are animals, not moving art.

    Smartest acquaruim fish, the oscar.
They recognize you, look you in the eye, know when you will feed them and so much more.

For some people they do, personally I like fish because they require little care, no petting and I dont have to house to train them and also because there is a multitude of studies showing the mental and physical health benefits of watching an aquarium.

Oh and they are a great starter pet for a child who may later move on to taking care of more complicated creatures.

But be careful what you spray . . . I lost all of my Tropical Fish one time when someone sprayed an aerosol can in the air . . . I was not even aware of it and when I returned from a weekend outing I found both 16-Gallon Aquariums full of dead fish. So, please be cautious.

I like aggressive fish. I used to keep several freshwater tanks, even had one to keep minnows in for feeding. It was cool, but not home to care for them. firemouth alligator gar

I'm pretty sure fish would like to be in their natural element.
  • John 2013/06/04 06:12:50 (edited)
They are nice to have. I use to have a number of tanks. But I wouldn't call them pets. Now dogs and cats are pets. And a few other animals I would consider pets. For me it's dogs. Of course everyone is different. Maybe some on SD think fish do make good pets. Check out the picture in my profile of my two boys. German Shepherds. I'll take them over fish any time.

They are beautiful, elegant, relaxing, and trainable via shaping with positive reinforcement as they love to eat. Some of them like being petted too.

Like a trainable decoration? Just saying how I feel, but the way you described fish were as though it was trainable decoration. Though I don't question the beauty and tranquility a fish can provide, they don't make very good pets unless you're looking for something that doesn't do much of anything.

I love cats, but my goldfish don't tear up the furniture or carpet and never noisy, also they're peaceful to look at.
  • Gina 2013/06/04 05:26:16
They aren't as interactive as dogs, cats and birds, maybe rats and hamsters (among a few others).
I also don't consider reptiles, amphibians or insects/bugs good pets, you CAN have them but it's not the same if you can't play with them.
  • cassidysf 2013/06/04 04:36:09
Being allergic to animals with fur or feathers , fish make great pets for me.
I have one right now. His name is Paris.
  • LockiNinja 2013/06/04 04:32:05
Fish shouldn't be regarded as pets. You can't exactly play with a fish unless you want to kill it or it's already on the plate. The most enjoyment you can get out of a fish is by watching Finding Nemo. Dory meme
  • Amber 2013/06/04 04:20:53
They can be entertaining on rare occasions, but usually aren't worth the hassle. The only joy I ever got out of a fish came from one of my guppies. One of the other fish in the tank ate all the babies, and one of them got smart enough to take up residence in the bubble castle. Whenever it had to let a bubble out the window, he'd pop out, then rush back is as fast as he could.

They're basically decorations that you have to feed...

*edited* Unless you get an octopus, which are highly intelligent, capable of problem solving, excellent hiders, quick in water and on land, and spit on people they don't like... That'd make a good guard dog, maybe.

  • KyoriYuki 2013/06/04 03:55:29
They just hang out in your room, they don't take up much space, most landlords allow them, they're not high maintenance, and sometimes it can be nice and calming to just watch them swim around. I had a pretty beta fish once, and when he swam around with the room lights off and the tank lights on the room was kind of thrown into a blue-ish red rainbow.
  • Jack 2013/06/04 03:48:29

I have a small aquarium and the fishes I have in there were born In The aquarium. The parents died but they have been around me since their birth. I will play with them and they will come and kiss my fingers when I put them in. Then they fallow me around for food,

Can't pet a fish, a fish won't meet you at the door when you come home, But then again they taste better than dog or cat.
