Good question: in psychology, the psyche represents the totality of the human mind - conscious and unconscious. Also animals have their conscious and unconscious mind, depending on their evolution. R. Descartes said "Cogito ergo sum", i.e. I think, therefore I am. There are many explanations, according to beliefs. And many questions still remain open.
