Cats have 32 muscles that control the
outer ear (compared to human's 6 muscles each).
A cat can rotate its ears independently 180
degrees, and can turn in the direction of sound
10 times faster than those of the best watchdog.

I did not know. I hope my cats wouldn't be terribly ashamed of me, if they knew how ignorant I was about how their ears manage to be so expressive. : )

I didn't know that but I am trying to save my lil one who apparently got stung by a wasp in the face and after i thought things were fine, she now has what I think is a bad ear infection. Can't tell because the vets are charging more for my cats healthcare than they would a human. Am I wrong to be pissed about that? Well, she's my only family (some will think that pathetic but she's my lil one) and the poor thing is stumbling around because she's lost her balance. For a cat, the ears are extremely sensitive and when the vets charge you an arm, a leg and a kidney, it's no wonder so many people kill their pets or abandon them when they get sick or are injured. Where I used to live, people learned I was not the type to call authorities when a new cat found it's way to me... at one time I had over 30 of them but when I moved where I am now, I was allowed only one cat and I found homes for all the others on farms where they became barn cats with a few being taken in as house pets. I had some very beautiful and unique kittens born from this army of cats and when I went to check the mail... they all followed me to the box making me look like a pied piper lol.

Cat's can be a wonder if you treat them like a human. Dogs will obey or be faithful... but a cat sets you straight if you expect a relationship as they are their own person (cat or whatever, I don't know what they think they are) and if you respect that, you can get cats to be more human than any dog and reveal just how intelligent they are. My cat actually pets me and if I am sick, she follows me around worried about me sometimes walking ahead as if to say it's clear to enter the room. She's a smart one but maybe it's her time. I hope not but with the cost of vets being so high now and being on disability because if I stress out I keel over like one of those goats you see on tv when you scare them.

Glad to see you posted this Astro.

Wonder how many a dog has?

I would assume it depends on the dog breed as some dogs have almost no muscle mass in their ears while others would seem to have as many as a cat.

    That's pretty amazing.
I also just recently learned that dogs can control which way their noses point, without moving their heads.
