It was a good town, had the hugh mill right at the downtown area, had a very nice, old YMCA right there too, but in the maybe late 80's media mogul Rupert Murdoch came by, bought Cannon Mills, tore it down, leaving thousands of hard working people with out work, most of which had worked there all their working life.
Tore down our wonderful YMCA, which had a library a big reading area in it, hugh indoor pool, Racket Ball & Hand Ball courts, big Basket ball courts & upper surrounding running lane above the court, big Weights area, Duck Pin bowling lanes, large pool table area with about ten pool tables, and much more. It was a beautiful stone and brick building. In the summer times, it didn't even need air conditioning. They just opened the large windows and the air came in and just cooled down
That dirty scum of the earth bast@rd just came into the town and destroyed it and now it is virtually a ghost town as for all the businesses and life that was there.
Now, where the Mill stood, there is a new medical research facility that I'm sure is benifting him and going to be a big asset only to big pharmacy.

Grew up there, loved the many grand movie theaters that where down town, which only one stands today. Had great times and memories of childhood and in my teenage years there.
To me though, that home is gone now and I've been away from there for many years.
"FU Murdoch !!!"
Now it's one big, nasty traffice jam packed full of fast food joints. There used to be your four basic churches. Now there is a church on every corner but everyone is always getting arrested.
This is the actual town of Newport Mi
My childhood was in the suburbs but we moved into the inner city when I was 13.
