Historically, many if not most people, no matter how shady their lives, had some sort of religious faith. Among many major religious traditions, the confession and rejection of past evil deeds brought forgiveness for them.
It's believed, by long tradition that someone on their deathbed confessing a crime, has no motive to lie any longer, being past punishment, but may well be trying to ease a conscience, and pave his way to forgiveness of some sort. Which is why a deathbed confession has been regarded as more reliable than any other. There is also something called a 'dying declaration'
I don't really know about a confession but if i where about to die i would either do 2 things.
i would tazke a piece of paper and scribble a bunch of random numbers, and leave them guessing. Or. I would gather a bunch of people right before i die die and say '' The treasure(or gold ) is barried in.......( death )
Or maybe just say something really random like ' I'll be back ' or ' The toaster is jammed again ''.
