Many religions have had half human-half beasts. This is just another one of them. Do we think centaurs are real? What about the sphinx? I always thought it was funny that they drew them with breasts, used to feed warm blooded babies. Fish lay eggs. What would the breasts be used for?
I recently watched a documentary on this! Anyway...
Since I can't definitively say they don't exist, it means its possible that there's at least one out there in the ocean somewhere. However, it means mermaids would've had to survive a lot of the predators like biting sperm whales and megladons (50ft (and even bigger) long sharks). Also, it seems like they would've been spotted and reported a lot more than they have been due to all the fishing that goes on.
If they do exist, I imagine they're nothing like what we have them pictured as. I imagine they'd be more fish than human since having seashell covered boobs isn't really an evolutionary advantage considering sharks don't seem nearly as enthralled by them as normal males do.
You never know. Just because you've never seen one doesn't mean they're not out there somewhere. Maybe they're just good at hiding. Plus it's fun for the imagination.
I live by the sea, not sure what would happen if I saw a mermaid, one thing is for sure, they would be hard pressed to get a big rock to sit on, the seals around here keep their towels on them...!!!
God would have no reason to create them. Animals aren't made in God's image. But people are. so I don't think a merman or merwoman would fit that image.

I wanted to be a mermaid when I grew up. Still do.
