MONROE, Ohio - A top cop mistakenly shot himself in the thigh after giving his daughter a lesson in gun safety, police said.

Middletown police Chief Greg Schwarber, 54, was preparing to clean his Glock .45-caliber pistol on Friday and didn't realize the gun was still loaded, according to a police report.

Written by officers from neighboring Monroe, the report said the bullet entered Schwarber's leg just above the knee.

When officers arrived, they found the chief lying on the floor with a towel covering his leg. Schwarber was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The hospital had no record of Schwarber being treated or admitted. A home phone number for him couldn't be found.

    I know this is old, but lets get some facts straight. i know the guy. He was not 'teaching' gun safety lesson, he and his daughter were out shooting at the range for a few hours prior to coming home to clean the weapons. He took the magazine out and removed the bullets from the magazine when he reached to grab the remote and flipped the tv to a football game. upon seeing the loose pile of bullets he continued to disassemble to gun, one step of which is pulling the trigger. Unfortunately there was still a round in the chamber, which he forgot to check. Accidents happen, even when its second nature to people. Instead of poking fun at him, lets be glad no one else was hurt, and that he wasn't injured seriously. I wouldnt call this a 'hilarious event'.

    You live and learn. We all are only human. I feel sorry for his daughter. That must have scared her to death to see her father shoot himself accidently. Well that probably taught them both a very important lesson about gun safety. One they both will never forget. I just hope he will have full use of his leg and not have any problems with it.

    Guess he didn't recheck his weapon when he pulled it off. Just goes to show you that accidents happen. But by practicing important safety measures, like rechecking your weapon, can really save you some body parts

    A local cop had one of the mini glock pistols that he carried in the small of his back. For those of you who don't know, this model has no safety. You guessed it, he shot himself through the right buttock and the bullet also grazed his calf muscle. A few weeks later he sold the gun to a local gun shop and the owner told me the story.     Sounds like a cover-up story to me.....an officer with that many years behind his belt would know (and have second nature) to check his wepon for live ammo, prior to any safety lessons.
