Can You Ride a Bike Without Holding the Handlebars?

I could back when I was able to ride a bike. I think a better question would be who can't ride without holding the handlebars?

I wouldn't imagine so. o_o I usually drag my feet along the ground when I go down the slightest hill, so I think that demonstrates I'm not likely to stay on for very long, should I attempt 'no hands'. :D

I can barely ride a bike WHILE holding the handlebars.

I did it often in my childhood :)

That's how I got 15 stitches in my leg. Well, that and I was going down an incredibly steep hill :P

I don't think that it's safe so I wouldn't do it. I've already been injured riding my bicycle before, and I don't want it to happen again.

It's safe if your bike has the right geometry for it. Rake (distance between the imaginary line right down the upper pipe on your front fork and the front axle) should be small, the angle of the front fork shouldn't be too low or too high, and it's easier with large wheels, and smooth, wide tires (as opposed to knobby mountain bike tires). Also, since you obviously can't use your brakes (even if you have foot brakes, those come on rather abruptly, and would make it hard to maintain control without using your hands) you should not do it on uneven terrain or anyplace where there is anything or anyone for you to hit.

Basically, it's only for smooth roads with light traffic and no intersections, and if you've got the wrong kind of bike, you probably shouldn't do it even then.

It was dead-easy to do back in my teens but mid-range bikes in the last 10 or so years have too little friction around the handlebars and the front fork.

It's the fork and frame geometry, not the amount of friction, and plenty of bikes had that issue 20 years ago.

I always rode it that way, including around corners. Fun - it's all in the balance.
