Yes. They have brains. Therefore they have feelings. Therefore they have sadness too.

I knew a dog that drowned herself because her owner was ignoring her.

I answered a question about this about a month ago, I think, and I believe they can.
  • Lisa 2010/05/03 20:45:58
Because they don't reason like humans, it is impossible. Suicide is a conscious decision, and they don't have that ability...
  • Sparklee 2010/05/03 20:43:39
They can,but it's not on purpose if they do.That's what makes animals so special. They love life and they don't want to die.The poor abused animals and all the ones in pounds and shelters don't want to die either. They just hope for a loving home.
  • Jay0Byrd 2010/05/03 20:43:27
in some cases grief and despair can kill dogs, but if that's suicide in involunteered suicide an un-purpose act, but planned suicide because they haven't been given their favorite treat or whatever is unheard of.

Animals have been known to die of sadness. They will mourn themselves to death with the lose of a loved one. How many know the story of Lobo the White Wolf:)
FACT: Wolves mate for life. Lobo the white wolve became a reign of terror after they killed his mate. There are two stories about two different Lobos, I can't find the original story I first read that started out from the part where the mate was killed.

Africa was pledged by wolves taking people from their huts and killing them. Scientists from around the world rushed to explain this (it's not common of the wolf to get near man) what they found out was they villagers found the wolves den, burned the puppies out then stomped them to death. When the wolves returned they followed the scent of their baby killers & enacted their revenge.
There are so many more fascinating stories about these mystic creatures but I realize that I wondering off subject:) Thank you jt for your patience of my enthusiasm with animals.

Since they can't rationalize...they can't commit suicide. I don't think they know that the bahavior they're engaging in will kill them. The raccoon that jumped into the fire, for instance, in the video posted below, was probalby scared by something & just wasn't bright enough to understand that the fire could kill him. Same with the monkey that jumped from the balcony. He was more likely attempting to jump down to the next balcony to escape the attack from the much larger monkey that was approaching him. As for the lemmings, they are driven by some internal instinct and have no idea that the leap will end their lives. Animals can't reason, so it's unlikely they understand the ramifications of their behavior.
  • Zolfie™ 2010/05/03 19:27:54
yes... some sea/water animals know how to beach them selves which is basically suicide unless they can get back...

    seawater animals beach basically suicide

yes, most sea mammals do it whales and dolphins due if they are sick.
  • Lindy... Steve☮E... 2010/05/03 19:41:43
Whales and dolphins who are sick have their radar screwed up. Our navy experiments all the time in the oceans and the strong sonar signals they send confuse the animals,
possibly even damage them in some way. They're not trying to kill themselves, they lose their ability to navigate and wind up swimming towards the shore instead of away from it,
    and getting beached..

That maybe a factor, but sailors observed that long before ships had sonar or even motors for that matter. Also native Americans believed that they sacrificed themselves.

Raven do by force it if they lose their love ones. Lemmings ? Dogs ? At least it looks like it.
