I understand that it was meant to be a joke but the only problem is that it wasn't funny. ;)

I posted this as a joke and purposely put it in the political section, knowing the reaction it would get, for simply using the name Sambo. It demonstrates the inability of the liberals to laugh at themselves and to see it for what it is, a simple play on words without any underlying racist intent, just a series of words ending in ...bo! I could have redone it as Dumbo, Rambo and Bimbo without Dimbo and most likely have seen it receive the same sort of ridiculous responses. Having them going to ridiculous extremes culminating with them successfully having the "offending" name censored out of the joke, yet remaining throughout the poll in their responses. It's rather a joke on themselves.

Sorry Dave but calling America's first president with African heritage Sambo is considered in poor taste by a lot of people liberal and conservative alike. Its more than a simple play on words and you know it. In fact you posting it here demonstrates a lack of empathy on your part in my opinion.

Now if you would have used Dumbo instead that would have been acceptable since it has no racial undertones unlike Sambo. I seriously don't think anyone would have reported such a joke, they might call you a jerk but that that goes with the territory when posting on an open format like SH. God knows I can be a jerk at times here but that's much different than posting a joke that's considered offensive to African Americans.

Well it is what it is, I did it knowing full well the reaction it would receive and my point has been made. (Sambo was a Tamir Indian, not an African, those who would use the term Sambo as a racist slur against African Americans are ignorant of the origin of the name.

Apparently you're ignorant about the racist illustrations used on the old book covers, hence the reason why most African Americans find the name offensive by association.

Those were made during an era ruled by ignorance, it was not really until into the 1960's that the association of racist intent was made.

Back then just about any negative portrayal of Africans was acceptable because they were thought to be subhuman by a large segment of society. It may well be true that it wasn't until the civil rights era of the sixties that people began to speak up about it but that in no way means that the image wasn't considered offense to African Americans during that earlier era. In fact during that era lynching was common place as well so its no surprise that they didn't publicly object to the negative portrayal of black people.

Thanks for recognizing that Sambo is Indian. The story also has roots in Thailand (sort of like Cinderella--there are variations of Cinderella everywhere). Though I understand the background of the racial slur, it's time to get over it and realize that it was always ignorant on the part of those using it.
