"President Nicolas Sarkozy declared Monday that the Islamic burqa is not welcome in France, branding the face-covering, body-length gown as a symbol of subservience that suppresses women's identities and turns them into "prisoners behind a screen."

Someone is walking down the street in a fully covered Burqa- do you know who it is?? a woman? a man? a CRIMINAL?

Covering Head to Toe- is NOT A RELIGIOUS Stand- its is a CULTURAL position to keep women down- as 2nd class citizens- as property. We need to follow France's stand and also OUTLAW Burqa's here in America.

WOMEN'S RIGHTS.

That's the difference between European secularism and American. They keep religion from having any effect, we keep it separate from government.

Our form is far, far better. Freedom of religion is crucial.

How the hell are you going to enforce such a ban? First, you'd have to define exactly what is and is not a burqa. If you ban traditional burqas, then what's to stop someone from walking around with a tablecloth over their heads?

They live in a secular society and should dress accordingly in public.

Ban them all. Superstitious trinkets and garments have no place in our secular society.

Nuns are religious employees and are required to dress as their supervisors see fit. Like the Subway guy. In a secular society, which America is, we are all free to dress appropriately for our work, and for our work places to set standards for our appearance and attire.

Fundamentalist Christrians oppose secularism and support Islamic-style constraints on feminine attire. That's well known. And fine by me, believe what you like.

That does not however change actual facts that we are not a nation of fundamentalist and enjoy the benefits of our pervasive secularism.

Reasonable accomodation is the law and its a fine approach.

I appreciate the attempts of fundamentalists to make everything out to be the opposite of reality. Like relabeling the Burqa as freedom, and making up terms such as 'secular wear'.

    It's amusing.

Seems like that "opposite-thing" I mentioned. I say 'reasonable accomodation' and you say I mean 'forced removal'.

I am completely lost on the right to marry thing. I can't even think what the analogy might be.

Haha. I'd have to ban BOTH the cross and the turquoise. Turquoise has spiritual connotations too.

I had to Google Prop 8, but I recall it now. I believe that the Equal Protection Clause should sort this out.

The burqa is symbolic of misogyny and subservience disguised as a religious symbol. More like wearing a swastika than a cross. It is not reasonable to accomodate this symbolism.

good point- HOWEVER-given a free and open chance to ask a woman- if she would prefer NOT to wear one- I am willing to bet ALL WOULD SAY NO- prefer NOT to wear one. However- such FEAR and strict laws and generation of "doing as is" has been instilled in these women. .....
Sharia Law is being pushed in Dearborn Michigan area- lets see how many American Women- born and raised here- will willingly/freely wear a head scarf/head dress or full burqa???

the "covering" of women started as a cultural thing way -way back- out in the desert when people roamed the land- and the population was not was it is today. Women- were a asset a luxury- a needed item to grow ones clan.
So the women were "forced" to cover up- to protect themselves from being "kidnapped" from other men. If a man couldn't see- wouldn't be interested in you- hopefully.
So time has not changed for men of the middle east- its the woman's responsibility to keep the men "uninterested". ?????
Equality for ALL- MEN AND WOMEN.

"them to dress like what they view as whores?"- that is a "view" that has been instilled in them for generations- one has to ask- is that honestly their view- NO its their cultural view in their country. Look at immigrants that come to America. I will use my neighbors as example- currently 3 generations live in the household- grandma is from the old country - speaks little english- wears a babushka- and covers herself wearing a house dress and black leggings. The daughter - middle aged women- wears dresses- a head scarf- sometimes!!! and speaks english.
the granddaughter wears what every American girl wears- occasionally at family events wears a head scarf- but given the society and the freedom - each generation changed.
