As a child did you lie in the back window of your family car?

Before the safety rules and seat belts I would get on that little ledge in back window. I remember one time my father stopping abruptly and I flew on the floor .

No that was not an option as most of the time our family car was an Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser

I don't remember, although probably. Back then cars were way bigger than they are now, for the most part.

One kid in the asleep in the seat, one kid asleep in the window. No seat belts, step-dad with a Bud in his hand. I once used a six-pack for a pillow.

Never....that was where we stored heavy and sharp projectiles in case Dad had an opportunity to hammer the brakes. If it was hot enough it was also where we would make the dog lie down so we could see how far her tongue would stick out.

I still remember Dad's first car with actual seat belts. We were fascinated with them and I clearly remember Dad telling us to leave the damn things alone and tuck them down the back of the seat out of the way.

I used to do that too, jump around in the back seat, climb through the little door into the trunk, and ride around town in the back of our pickup truck! We never used seatbelts when I was growing up, and when I think back on it I cant believe we did that. But I lived, and it was fun!

I think I rode most of the way from San Diego, California to Kingsville, TX that way. This would have been in the early 60s.

I was a Navy Brat. So we made cross country trips every couple of years as Dad's Duty Station Changed. That was the best seat in the car. Great views or you could just lay on your back and watch the clouds go by.

Late 60's moved from Dallas to mom's ancestral home Maine. In the way-back of a 65 Rambler station wagon hauling a U-Haul.
Huh?! Haven't thought of that in a while. Thanks for the memories.

I do remember sitting in my father's lap and steering, riding in the back of my uncle's pick up, standing up in the front seat between my parents, and driving with my Nana while she smoked with the windows rolled up. lol...

I did all those things as well, my uncle would drive while smoking with windows rolled up, also I can remember my aunt getting ashtray and cigarettes all in place and with baby in arms, bottle in one hand and cig in the other, sometimes she would even hold the bottle with her chin to baby's mouth while lighting up. It's a wonder my generation survived.

LOL...Right? We have pictures of my mother pregnant, cocktail in one hand and cigarette in the other. That was my oldest brother who weighed in at close to 10 lbs.

Nope. My mom had me strapped in properly, and that was back in the early 80s. My grandpa on the other hand... "Wanna ride in the back of the truck?"

Trust me, I don't think those were the "good old days." God had extra protection on me during those times.

I was a child in 50's and early 60's. I don't think there were any safety rules back then. I do remember when in the front seat my mother or father putting their hand in front of me when making abrupt stops.
