Artist Creates Optical Illusions With Pencil Drawings: Outstanding or Eh?

We've all heard the phrase "art imitates life," but it can't be taken any more literally than in this new pencil/photograph collection by Belgian artist Ben Heine. Incorporating his intricate pencil sketches in with already existing photographs, Heine creates a strong relationship between imagination and reality -- and even offers some optical illusions for the observer to drown himself in, which is exactly Heine's goal.

"I just make art for people," the 28-year-old artist from Brussels said. "I want them to dream and forget their daily troubles...Each new creation should tell a story and generate an intense emotion..." Well, it's easy to forget about our troubles with these unique pieces or art.

The collection is aptly titled "Pencil Vs. Camera" and it will be exhibited in art shows in London starting next month.

With photoshop and a couple of pictures of a hand, you could create these very quickly, with just random pictures off the web.

I know many people that can draw this well. I can produce near photo quality pencil work. The real talent here is the perspective he achieves. He has taken good art, and given it dimension. That is a talent all its own. Oh yea, and its pretty cool to look at also..Just a thought...

I did it in 5 minutes though, if I had taken an hour It would have been much better. It was only to demonstrate how easy it is.

Drawing either takes talent, or extreme discipline. It's not as "easy" as you make it out to be.

It was a demonstration of how easy the image was created not an example of what I would do. If I had been inclined I would have taken more than 5 minutes to do it and drawn the image insert instead. It's nicely done but it is relatively easy.

Except for the part where your example is a very obvious Photoshop filter, unlike the exhibit. Even if the ones in the exhibit /weren't/ done with traditional media, they still would have taken lots of work, not a few seconds.

Here is one I did. The coffee cup was drawn by me and rendered using 3DS MAX, the thunderclouds and lightning were done in Photoshop CS4 as was the storm waves in the rain all hand drawn also the final hue, saturation, contrast and colour tone. It was done a while a go, I am no longer able to draw as I have arthritis in both my hands.

but it is still different from what he does. you use a computer to fix it. he draws it in hand, holds up the camera and snaps a shot. no computer fixing involved at all. trust me,... i know. and stop copying the same text over and over again >.

First of all, photoshopping is relatively easy. I know that firs hand. It doesn't take much real talent. Second, you're making this sound like "oh it's so easy to do there's no real talent in it because I can do it on photoshop." That's almost the same as saying "oh Van Gogh had no real talent. All he did was dip a brush in paint and smear it on canvas. Thats so easy." Sure, the concept sounds easy, but the execution is NOT. This takes hard work and skill and anything you create will not look nearly as good.

That is cool too, however...These are a bit more creative imo.

I'm hoping these are hand drawn and not computer generated like the one you put up (looks like it)is.....
