We've all heard the phrase "art imitates life," but it can't be taken any more literally than in this new pencil/photograph collection by Belgian artist Ben Heine. Incorporating his intricate pencil sketches in with already existing photographs, Heine creates a strong relationship between imagination and reality -- and even offers some optical illusions for the observer to drown himself in, which is exactly Heine's goal.
"I just make art for people," the 28-year-old artist from Brussels said. "I want them to dream and forget their daily troubles...Each new creation should tell a story and generate an intense emotion..." Well, it's easy to forget about our troubles with these unique pieces or art.
The collection is aptly titled "Pencil Vs. Camera" and it will be exhibited in art shows in London starting next month.

Though the level of creativity may appear to be high, unfortunately, I think the degree of difficulty is very low since it appears that the drawings are all created afterwards with a non-moving, old photograph. Any artistry that adds difficulty along with creativity attracts a crowd. Art is more than the end result... it's a human drama of how hard it was to pull off. Who wants to go see Picaso do something as easy as this?! Whereas who wants to see preschoolers pulling this off on their own - the human drama plays a BIG role in art appreciation. Therefore, I encourage you (as a fellow artist) to think about how you can include a strong element of emotional, human drama into your art - make it tell a story (like the child shown painting her dream house in the slums). That could even be used for a big campaign! (also, hide the not-so-good art to protect your 'brand'.)reply - DontDri... Tony 2011/09/30 13:55:35

It's creative, but it doesn't draw my attention as an artist because it is very easy. I would have even forwarded a link if the animals were drawn live just before taking the picture of them in the exact pose. That is hard to pull off and worthy of double praise! But the drawings are obviously all post-drawn. It is still creative. And art is not something to hate. You either like it or you move on.reply - DontDri... Tony 2011/09/30 17:51:35
Since when does level of difficulty determine how fine the art is? Body painting and splatter paintings that took little to no effort, talent or challenge have been praised as fine art. Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder. Oh and this is certainly not on the level of Picasso, but it is still outstanding as the question asks.reply - Tony DontDri... 2011/10/04 16:21:49
I challenge the artist to expand his audience by also adding a level of difficulty along with his awesome creativity! Good enough?reply - katchan 2011/09/30 13:23:27Outstanding+1Very awesome ^___^reply
